In brief: A quick, sensible inspection before you unpack. We focus on what you can verify and which steps are safe and realistic.
Before your suitcase hits the bed
Keep luggage on a hard surface or luggage rack away from the bed while checking the room. Avoid unpacking into drawers before a brief inspection.
The useful spots to inspect
Use your phone flashlight to inspect the mattress piping, corners, headboard and joints of the bed frame. Look for live insects, shed skins or concentrated dark spotting. You do not need to dismantle the room.
If you find evidence
Photograph it, tell hotel staff and request a different room that is not next door or directly above or below the affected one if possible. Consider changing accommodations if the concern cannot be resolved.
When you return home
Unpack away from the bed, inspect luggage and use a high-heat dryer cycle for dryer-safe clothes when warranted. Washing alone may not kill every life stage; follow garment care labels.
A balanced approach
A quick inspection reduces uncertainty, but no five-minute check guarantees that a room is free of bed bugs.
