In brief: In many cases the answer is no. We focus on what you can verify and which steps are safe and realistic.

A mattress is not automatically lost

Depending on condition and treatment strategy, a mattress can often be kept and covered with a properly fitted bed bug encasement. A licensed professional can advise after inspection.

Encasement basics

Choose a cover designed for bed bugs, with a secure closure that fully encloses the mattress. Check fit and fabric integrity regularly, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for how long it must remain installed.

If you do dispose of it

Follow local disposal rules, mark the item as infested where required and seal or wrap it before moving through shared spaces. Do not put infested items where someone may pick them up.

Look beyond the mattress

Bugs can remain in headboards, frames, walls and adjacent furniture. Replacing one item cannot substitute for treating the affected environment.

Make the decision after identifying

A stained or itchy bed does not necessarily contain bed bugs. Confirm the cause before spending money.
